After wins on Saturday for both Frankfurt and Rhine the Claymores last game of the 2003 season was played in driving rain with no World Bowl spot on offer. The Admirals marched the ball downfield on their opening drive but they were stopped on a fourth down play at the Claymores 30. Nall took the field and started to move the ball helped by Simonton and he completed a great pass to Trafford to put the Scots in a scoring position. Nall then found Mike Malan from 20 yards out and he opened the scoring. Rob Hart booted through the extra point .The Admirals came right back and a acrobatic catch by Hatchette set up a two yard rumble by Redmon to go in untouched and tie the ball game. Again Nall moved the ball with ease but the drive stuttered and a botched snap on a Hart 33 yard goal attempt kept the score level, Hart doing really well to recover the ball and preventing Amsterdam advancing it. Darnell Robertson snuffed out the first Admirals drive of the second quarter when he blasted through and sacked Hill on fourth down and then Shane Stafford executed a perfect 60 yard drive which culminated in a 4 yard shovel pass to Malan who scored his second of the game, Hart again was perfect in the difficult conditions.. Another sack, this time by Chris Ward stuffed the Admirals again and the score stayed the same at the half time whistle. Chatman ran back the opening kick of of the second half to the Claymores 43 yard line and hard running by Simonton who was to end the day as the leagues leading rusher moved the ball on the ground. But with the ball on the 15 Nall picked out Edell Shepherd on a slant and he scored the Scots 3rd TD of the game. Nall was intercepted by Kent and the ball was returned to the Claymores 11, The Admirals wasted no time in making him pay when Redmon scored his second of the game through a big hole up the middle. Mike Malan then was stripped of the ball deep in Amsterdam territory and Moore recovered for the Admirals but the greasy ball was causing trouble for both teams and Bingham recovered a Hill fumble at the Admirals 17 yard line to put the Claymores in scoring position again. The offense couldnt move the ball ahd Hart connected with a 32 yard field goal to make the score 24 to 14 in the Claymores favour. Bingham got his second sack of the day midway through the fourth quarter and a superb show of rushing by Simonton including a 50 yard scamper both chewed the clock and put the Claymores in scoring position again.. A trick play was incorporated when Trafford attempted to find Couper and the pass was broken up but inside the final two minutes Stafford fired a perfect pass to Shepherd from 29 yards out to end the scoring and bring down the curtain on a memorable season with a 31 to 14 victory. Its sad that this Claymores team will not be gracing the WorldBowl, but early mistakes and silly losses are at fault. It was a valiant effort down the stretch winning 4 games in a row and the offense putting up record numbers. |
