SCOTTISH CLAYMORES - 13
SUNDAY 2ND MAY 2004
BACK
For the first time this season we lost the toss and kicked off, and got off to the best possible start when Scott stripped the ball deep in Fire territory and Carter recovered to give the Claymores excellent field position.
The Claymores couldnt move the ball however and went for it on fourth down, handing the ball back.
Afrer a Rhein Field Goal, Hybl mover the ball helped by some great play by Hicks to the Fire 28 yard line where he found Bellamy for the games first touchdown, Rob Hart moved closer to Jesus Angoys record by tacking on the extra point.
Rhein, led by Cowboys QB Hutchinson moved the ball downfield but the Claymores stuffed them on third down and Anderbrugge shanked a 31 yard attempt wide and the Claymores led 7-3 at half time.
Rob Hart was inches wide with a career long attempt 47 yarder and again the Claymores defense stepped up, sacking Hutchinson and forcing them to settle for a 45 yard Field Goal.
Two further Field Goals by Rhein pushed the score to 12-7 in favour of the visitors as the clock wound down and the Claymores trotted back onto the field on thir own 10 yard line with 1.27 left on the clock.
Hicks gained a first down on a draw play, then Anes found, McCready and Helfman to move into Fire territory before Hicks moved the ball deeper..
Anes spiked the ball then a penalty moved them back to the Fire 28 with just 12 seconds left. Anes then droppe dback and found Bellamy who wrsetled the ball away from the cornerback and came down with it in the End Zone with 6 seconds left. The two point conversion failed  but after a couple of atempted rugby plays on the ensuing kick off return, the game ended with the first victory of the season in the most unlikely of circumstances
